On Wednesday, CNN chief executive Mark Thompson, flanked by his top lieutenants, joined an 11 am Zoom meeting from a New York conference room for a regularly scheduled town hall with staff across the network. In the wake of Paramount’s settlement with state AGs, clearing the final major legal hurdle in its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery—and the White House waging war on CNN—what would normally be a routine all-hands meeting focused on quarterly results suddenly carried considerably higher stakes.

“I’m afraid this is one of those occasions where… you’ll find the answers are slightly scarcer than the questions,” Thompson acknowledged early in the meeting, “But I’ll tell you what I can.”
