War, climate combine to accelerate shifts in global alignment

President Barack Obama described his energy policy as “an all-of-the-above strategy” — a phrase that could be used to describe the international scramble to cope with multiple energy crises.

Nations are facing war-driven energy disruptions while simultaneously attempting to overhaul energy consumption and production systems in response to climate change — which seemed to announce its arrival loudly and catastrophically in spots around the world this year. 

Policies sometimes seem to be going in different directions all at once: reversals and reversion to fossil fuels in some cases, accelerated development of more climate-friendly options in others — whatever will help get Northern Hemisphere countries through their winter.

With the frenetic activity comes shifts in alignment, as European nations sever energy ties with Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine and seek — quickly — other sources of supply.
