Scott Jennings crossed a line on CNN, but the bigger problem is the show itself
CNN’s ‘NewsNight’ is built around confrontation. The result is a show that too often rewards heat over substance.
CNN’s “NewsNight” — a nightly prime-time show hosted by the very capable Abby Phillip — is a news version of the embrace-debate sports shows such as ESPN’s “First Take.” Except it’s ruder and dumber.
And far more troubling because the topics are far more serious.
In general, I like and respect CNN and Phillip. But this show feels beneath both. While there’s nothing wrong with healthy debate about the latest political and world topics, this show often feels toxic. Part of that toxicity comes from putting commentators from each end of the political spectrum next to one another and having them discuss polarizing issues.
