Many policymakers see carbon capture and storage, in its various guises, as a critical piece of any climate action plan — and the federal government agrees, to the tune of $1.2 billion in support for projects that otherwise would be economically infeasible.

The policy decision has consequences, intended or otherwise. The federal subsidies will provide the foundation for a new round of investment in fossil fuel infrastructure — projects that could be described as treading water in the move away from fossil fuel consumption driving climate change.

Supporters call the projects a critical bridge in that energy transition. Critics see them as a gift to the fossil fuel industry.
