The Times is marking the milestone by revisiting nearly two centuries of triumphs, mistakes and change

Sept. 18, 1851, was a special day in American journalism.

It was on that day — 175 years ago today, to be exact — that The New York Times published for the first time.

On Thursday, to celebrate this remarkable anniversary, the Times rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
