Listen to the voters
To start things off, I asked a few media leaders and political brainiacs for their tips on navigating media coverage of election day and night. Here’s what they said:
The Associated Press executive editor Julie Pace: “Be patient and prioritize facts over speculation. Votes can take time to count, and the absence of an immediate answer doesn’t mean something is wrong. At AP, we’ve been counting votes and reporting election results for more than 175 years. A big lesson from all that experience is that getting it right matters more than getting it first.”
Michigan Democratic State Senator Mallory McMorrow: “Keep in mind that a huge number of voters have already voted. In Michigan, early in-person voting has only existed for the last couple cycles. So if there aren’t long lines at some polling places this evening, that’s by design!”
