Cruz promoted legislation that would reshape college sports, adding to criticism that ESPN is advocating for its passage

ESPN has spent the past several years trying to navigate — often awkwardly and inconsistently — the delicate balance between discussing sports, politics and social issues.

There has been criticism from both inside and outside the company. Sometimes because of accusations that it has avoided politics. Sometimes because it’s been accused of wading too far into politics and social causes.
