CBS News cuts radio division amid layoffs
The radio network had been operating since 1927 and counts Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite among its alumni
CBS News executives informed staff Friday that they were eliminating CBS News Radio as part of broader layoffs at the company.
Roughly 6% of staff, or nearly 60 individuals, were affected, according to The New York Post. The cuts come as editor-in-chief Bari Weiss — who joined the outlet in October following a change in ownership at CBS — reshapes its coverage to the chagrin of some employees.
“It’s no secret that the news business is changing radically, and that we need to change along with it,” reads a note sent by Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski. “New audiences are burgeoning in new places, and we are pressing forward with ambitious plans to grow and invest so that we can be there for them. That means some parts of our newsroom must get smaller to make room for the things we must build to remain competitive.”
