Inside CBS News, the network’s leadership team is hard at work trying to reengineer its perpetually third-place morning show. With Tony Dokoupil having moved to the “Evening News,” there is now at least one vacant seat up for grabs on CBS Mornings.” That’s not to mention the uncertainty surrounding Gayle King’s role on the show, which could potentially free up a second seat, though CBS News brass is trying its best to find an arrangement to keep her.

Who will ultimately be tapped by Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss and network President Tom Cibrowski for the position(s) remains to be seen. In planning meetings, Weiss has floated a number of names she favors. As we previously reported, Weiss praised the host of The New York Times’ “The Daily,” Michael Barbaro, as well as Fox News personality Kat Timpf—although both are tied up at their respective shops. But Status has since learned that she also expressed significant interest in Sage Steele, the former ESPN anchor who has since morphed into a vocal Donald Trump supporter.
