On Saturday, a teary-eyed Peter Alexander addressed “Today” viewers, sharing that after 22 years with NBC News, he was stepping away from his role in search of both “a better balance between my personal and professional lives and to challenge myself with something new.” An emotional Alexander expressed gratitude for his time at the network, saying, “This is literally my happy place,” but acknowledged that commuting from Washington to New York was starting to take its toll.
By Monday, Alexander’s next challenge came into view, when MS NOW announced that the 49-year-old would be joining the progressive cable outlet to anchor the 11 a.m. weekday hour and serve as chief national reporter. The announcement stunned many in media circles, where some questioned why a straight-news Washington veteran would leave the broadcast network he called home for more than two decades for a cable outlet often defined by its opinion programming.
